5 July

I am using up all the bits of bamboo cane to make a little fence for the edge of the fishpond where the pump is. It took a long time to twist up the wire. Then it was painted with green fence paint.

9 July

These two pigeons were arguing over who gets to sit in the birdbath. The second pigeon gave up and settled on the dewy grass until the other one had finished.

13 July

For the first time, baby swans in the park pond. The hot dry weather has been good for patches of poppies, but as they are in the park, I think they were seeded by the gardeners, not wild ones that blew in.

17 July

Today we went to Hastings. It is a new car, so there are lots of different controls to get used to. I like to follow along on the map on the screen and watch the blue dot moving along that shows where we are.

These cliffs are tempting to climb and play on but there are some very big drops over hidden edges.

These are the shops I like, even if I don't buy anything!

These mosaics are over a short subway between the seafront and the main town.

The beach was extremely windy. The gulls were settled low on the stones, out of the main wind.

We watched the waves crashing, and they were a lot bigger in close-up. Someone has arranged these stones in grey, brown, white and black. I wonder how long they will stay like that.

We had to walk over this oily boat slipway very carefully and find a slightly cleaner patch. This is the East Cliff railway lift.

This is the remains of the cliff rock fall that happened four years ago, and there is the tiny figure of a person on the left. These gulls had been flying around someone feeding them and screeching, and after it was all gone, they began walking towards us in the hopes of more.

Back up on the cliff top, this is the view down to where they are using these diggers to lay lots of stones around the landing stage sections. I wonder if they are going to join it all up.

21 July

Still very hot dry weather, but froggy has found a damp place near the house, where the plants get the spare water.

Time to put a new point in by the gate to make it stronger. We also took off some of the trellises to paint them. They are not nailed up but sit on very long screws so that they can be removed for maintenance.

24 July

We went to South Norwood Country Park which is a nature reserve. The day was very hot. We walked round the lake but it was mostly dusty paths, trees and scrubby undergrowth.

You can only see the lake at intervals, going down little paths to these little viewing stages.

Here a lady was throwing seed for the geese. Although thistle are weeds with sharp points everywhere, I still really like the purple flowers. But I won't be growing any in my garden, too prickly.

More dusty paths and I can see some tree shade in the distance. We got very hot on our dusty walk.

Shade at last, and with a seat underneath. I am glad I brought my water bottle.

Back home, my apple pip seedlings are doing very well. They were already started growing when we cut the apple open, so I had to plant them.

27 July

After months without rain, it has finally come again. Circle and dots are now my favourite shapes, especially wet ones from the giant storm cloud drops. It got heavier very quickly and I had to run inside before I got soaked. There was thunder and lightning which I watched from the kitchen window.

28 July

We went to Hampton Court Palace. This is the rose garden.

There were still lots of roses, but probably past their best display. Lots of hydrangeas in the borders under the wall, with lacy flowers.

I think there were more people in the gardens than in the palace.

Then we went down to the river and watched the birds and boats.

We crossed the bridge and walked down in the other direction.

I am sure everyone here talks boats all the time!

This is East Molesey Lock. The sluice below the gates has been opened and the water looks as if it is boiling. Then the boats came out.

We watched the lock activity for some time, with boats coming in both directions. The lock fills and empties very quickly.

29 July

Today we are in Canary Wharf to see the roof garden in the Crossrail building.

Inside is a picture showing a cross-section, with the railway station deep underground. This piano for people to play is made up as a train on tracks, a bus and a taxi, and he seat is a bike seat.

It is full of plants from around the world, with lots of seats and different paths. There was another piano here as well at one end.

Brown Teddy found a seat but it was soaked. Not all the windows are glazed and the torrential rain we had yesterday has flattened these grasses.

Through one of the open triangular windows we could see Billingsgate Fish Market. This is this is the wind vane on those yellow struts in the photo.

Quite a few palms, but I am sure they must wrap them up in winter, because of all the openings. Back out in Canada Water, I was glad to see this little rocky beach for the birds.

We watched the fountains and waterfalls, they are very noisy. I am sure the office workers enjoyed having their lunch here during the heat wave.

This is the railway track bridge for the Dockland Light Railway, and the escalator down into Canary Wharf main railway station.
