TINY TED

Tiny Teds are very easy to make. They are entirely Garter Stitch which makes them look cuddly. They also have a jacket and a cosy sleeping bag bed with a padded pillow. Just right after a day in the Knitted Park and on the Knitted Beach! A whole family can be made very quickly, in different shades of brown and yellow. Once you have made the jacket you will have all sorts of ideas to increase Ted's wardrobe with nice things to wear.

You can make some as gifts for friends without spending hardly anything. A Loving Handmade gift is so much better than a very expensive one, as they will keep it forever and always remember your friendship.

Materials: Double Knit acrylic yarn, polyester toy stuffing small amount; little piece of black or brown yarn for nose and eyes.

2.75 mm knitting needles (UK size 12), small crochet hook, wool needle

Legs Starting with a leg, cast on 5 stitches and knit 10 rows. Cut the yarn and put the leg to one side. Make another leg the same.

Body Put the first leg back on the needle, and going across both legs, knit 10 rows for the body.

Arms Cast on 7 stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Knit 6 more rows.

The back of the Teddy is now done.

Neck opening. On the next row, knit 9, put 6 stitches onto a piece of spare yarn and cast on 6 twisted loops to make replacement stitches, then knit the last 9 stitches.

On the row coming back, knit all the stitches including the middle loops.

Now continuing knitting to complete the front of the Teddy:

Knit another 6 rows. Cast off 7 stitches at the beginning of the next two rows.

Body Knit 10 rows

Legs Knit the first 5 stitches only for 10 rows, cast off. Pick up the 5 waiting stitches for the other leg, knit 10 rows and cast off.

Head This is a large triangle shape which doesn't look like a head to start with, but it definitely will, when it is sewn up and shaped.

Cast on 10 stitches, pick up the 6 waiting stitches from the neck opening.

Cast on 10 stitches at the beginning of the next row. You now have 26 stitches for the base of the triangle.

On every row, knit the first two stitches together. Eventually there will only be one stitch left, cut the yarn leaving a long end, and pull through the loop to fasten off.

Making Up the Body Weave in all the short yarn ends to the wrong side. Fold the body in half at the shoulders, and sew all round the arms and legs with an overcast stitch on the outside.

Making Up The Head Thread the long end onto a wool needle and pass it through the other two tips of the triangle, pulling them all together. It will look like a sort of envelope shape, and where these three tips meet will become Ted's nose.

Sew up one of the little face seams, weave the yarn down to the nose again and sew up the other face seam. Weave the yarn down to the middle again. Pinch together the nose area and sew the sides together about halfway down the chin.

Ears Split a piece of yellow yarn into separate strands. (The picture shows dark green so you can see where the stitches go.) Using one strand, sew a little circle round one corner of the envelope shape, pull up tightly and tie off, to make a blobby round ear. Thread the loose ends to the inside of the head.

Finishing Stuff the body and head lightly, then sew the remaining triangle sides to the loops of the lower neck edge. Weave the yarn end in and out round the neck to secure it and trim off the end.

Nose, Mouth, Eyes Using one strand of black or brown yarn, make a dark blob for the nose, then a straight stitch downwards, and two short stitches upwards, like an arrow shape, for the smiling mouth. Then continuing with the strand of black, bring it out in the eye places to make two black blobs. Bring the yarn down through the stuffing to the nose and weave in and out to secure it. Then bring it out at the back of the head, pull tight a little bit and trim off. The end will spring back inside and disappear from view. Make the beginning end secure and disappear in the same way. Make a tiny speck of white in each eye with white sewing thread for the sparkle.

Tiny Ted is so pleased to have joined the family and start his adventures. He would now like a jacket, please!

TINY TED'S JACKET

This is so easy, Tiny Ted himself could make it! This one was done with a random yarn, so the colours change every few rows. It is in Stocking Stitch, with the first 2 and last 2 stitches in Garter Stitch. The Garter Border stops the front edges curling under.

Cast on 24 stitches and knit 8 rows in Stocking Stitch with Garter Borders at each side.

Then knit the first 6 stitches only for 11 rows and break the yarn.

Knit the middle 12 stitches only for 11 rows and break the yarn.

Knit the last 6 stitches only for 11 rows. Cast off in purl across all 24 stitches. This will join the shoulders with no sewing at all. Darn in the loose ends.

If it curls up too much, dab it lightly on both sides with a wet warm cloth, pat it flat and leave it to dry somewhere warm.

Here is Tiny Ted in a red winter coat, just right for Christmas. It was a damp day to be sitting on the cotoneaster bush, and the blackbirds have eaten most of the berries.

Make the jacket the same as before, but with more rows before starting the armholes. Cast off in white, then when you get to the very last loop, use it to crochet a single chain around all the edges.

TINY TED'S BED

This bed sleeping bag fits Tiny Ted but you can make it to fit any Teddy. Ted can get a good night's sleep with no cold draughts around the legs and the pillow can't fall out of bed. It starts at the front edge, goes down to the feet and up the back to the pillow section. After you have started, hold it against your Ted in case you need to add more stitches, so Ted can get in without any squeezing.

Leaving a long end, cast on 16 stitches and knit 23 rows in Stocking Stitch with a 2-stitch Garter Stitch Border.

Knit Row 24 in Knit instead of Purl. This makes a ridge on the right side that will fold over very neatly.

Continue in Stocking Stitch with Garter Border for another 37 rows, cast off leaving a long end. The long ends should end up at separate sides of the bed.

Fold over the foot end, and sew the side seams, using the long ends. The long end from the cast off row is threaded down the side to the correct position for the side seam.

Using the pillow colour and leaving a long end, pick up 12 stitches from just under the top edge of the bed. Purl back along the row. Knit 12 more rows in Stocking Stitch. Cast off leaving a long end. Push the pillow up slightly into a bump and use the second long end to sew the base seam to the bed, and up the side of the pillow. Stuff the pillow lightly and use the first long end to close the side seam.

The front edge will curl over just like a real bed with sheets, but if you want it to stay flat, start off with a few rows of Garter Stitch. Or, afterwards, you can crochet a row in white, and a second row in loops, to look like the top of a lace-edged sheet.

I am sure the Tiny Teds would like the first letter of their names embroidered on the front, especially when there is a whole family of Teds with similar beds to get mixed up over! Brown Teddy is asking his Tiny Ted which bedtime reading book he would like. Brown Teddy's favourite is "Tig and Tag's Island" who are two Shetland sheep who go on adventures.

Tiny Tina's Party Frock

The Frock is knitted from the top down, in two identical halves. The bodice is straight and the skirt is flared with lacy holes in the middle. The cast off is done with crochet chain loops.

Bodice Leave about 6 cm of yarn, then cast on 14 stitches and knit 10 rows in Stocking Stitch.

Skirt Knit 6 (yarn over, knit 2, yarn over) knit 6. Purl row.

Repeat the two rows five more times, but knitting 7 at the beginning and end of the Knit row, then 8, then 9, then 10, then 11. If your teddy is taller, do more rows like this until the skirt is long enough.

Frilly Lace Edge

With a crochet hook, make 3 chains through the first stitch on the left hand needle.

*Hook through the next stitch on the needle, pull a loop through that stitch and the chain, make 3 chains.

Repeat from * until all stitches are cast off. Cut yarn, leaving long end, and pull it through the last loop to fasten off.

Make another piece the same.

The lacy cast off edge and frayed tassel

Making Up

Sew the two side skirt seams together using the long ends.

Sew the shoulders together through 2 stitches at the outside corners, making sure there is plenty of room to get the head through the neck hole.

Cut a piece of yarn about 40 cm, attach the middle of it to the centre back waist on the inside of the frock with a knot, then thread each end in and out loosely round the waist, meeting at the centre front, with a little gap between the two threads. Tie a tight knot at the end of each thread end to prevent unravelling and tease apart the very end strands to make a tassel. When the frock is on Tina, tighten the belt slightly and tie in a bow.

Tina's Party Frock was done in a white yarn with a silver metallic thread. It would make a good angel robe for a nativity scene as well.

For jewels or a necklace on the bodice, make dots of different coloured yarn, using only a single strand.

For a less frilly hem, do only 1 or 2 chains between cast-off stitches instead of 3.
