1 January

Lots more fireworks than usual at midnight, and some people had bought really big boxes of fireworks. We were in bed by half past midnight.

Exactly the right way to start a fresh clean New Year, a big mob of starlings having a bath. They were coming and going all the time, so in all the flock was about 30 or 40. And there was still a little bit of water left in the bath!

6 January

We walk through the park on the way to the shops. If anyone slows down or stops, the geese start walking towards them. These doves did not mind us standing nearby. I don't know why the grass mud has footprints, the area was completely sodden with big puddles on the grassy areas.

The swans are regular residents now and raised youngsters last year in their nest in the side pond.

14 January

We were delighted to see the ducks now have a very swanky duckhouse with ramp.

These two Canada geese were fighting over the pile of grain, they walked off and the other birds ate it all. Seats were deserted for some reason!

13 January

A very wet and misty morning, but I like to see the nets covered in "diamonds".

All that is left of Christmas is the LED candle and this sparkly snowflake that I took off a card. We will leave up the glowing LED picture for a while, probably into next month.

16 January

We were hoping to wake up to some decorative snow, but it was only a light shower, just enough to slide down the greenhouse roof. Pidge doesn't care about snow, he just wants his regular breakfast.

17 January

We bought a big pack of wheat grains online to make our own wheat bags. They are specially dried on the farm for this purpose, so they are not damp. We made three largish bags out of an old pillowcase. I think it works out a quarter of the price of buying a wheat bag from a shop. It is very comfortable as the grains move around to mould to the shape of whoever is on it. We will have to heat them gradually in the microwave oven, so we know the right timings for their size.

21 January

We don't often see sparrows having a bath in winter, but when they do, they all join in together - safety in numbers.

24 January

Winter is biting now, ice from the bird bath, and ice from the pond overflow.

A dusting of snow to tease us, but it did not last long. Robin waiting for some pellets.

25 January

Frozen ice diamonds on the pond netting.

28 January

We took a walk by the river and saw diggers and net fences. The notice decribes how the river is being improved.

They are improving the banks and putting in these little berms made of hurdles and soil.

This mossy low wall looks like a painting of trees with white clouds.

We like to watch this waterfall from the bridge that goes over it. It is very noisy and at the bottom is a big mound of froth turning over and over.

Our favourite collared doves are back, in pairs, so we will see a lot more of them through the spring and summer. They drink from the birdbath further down the garden, as they don't like to be too near the house.
