Basic Teddies

These stocking stitch Teddies are about 6 or 7 inches tall. You need to make a smooth bear so that the clothes can be put on and off easily.

Police Officer Teddy

This Teddy is all ready to start his new career in the Police Force. The trousers are separate, it's just that his feet are not visible in the photo! The helmet has a badge insignia on the front. It has to be attached loosely to the head with ted-coloured yarn, as the only way to keep it on.

Here is Ted's phone and body cam.

In the pockets is a notebook, and attached to the top of the trousers is a pouch for the handcuffs, in metallic yarn.

When Ted is on duty at night, the Hi-Vis jacket is necessary. In one pocket is the torch and in the other is a small emergency first aid bag.

Biker Bear

This is Biker Bear1 fully kitted out for motorbike rides. His tee shirt and denim trousers are knitted as part of the Teddy. His belt with brass buckle (in gold metallic yarn) hides the colour change and is sew on, so it doesn't move.

Biker Bear2 has additional zip pocket effects on the jacket. It is a larger version of Tiny Ted's jacket, but this one was made in 3 separate pieces, a square for the back and two half squares for the front, with sleeve-coloured top rows. The sleeves were picked up and knitted in the round. If you don't have a front zip, then do a 2-stitch Garter Stitch border instead, to prevent curling. The metallic yarn must be oversewn on the inside with white sewing thread to fasten the cut ends, so it won't unravel.

The bag is for Biker Bear's snack - a crochet rectangle folded up and a single chain for the handle. Add a popper, or button and button loop. Biker Bear also has his motorbike licence, attached by a thread, taken from an internet example and covered with sticky-back film, it is about 1" long.

Start the crochet helmet at the crown and make a cup shape, then some plain straight rows to lengthen the cup. Then go back and forth on about three-quarters of the stitches, and at the same time reduce a few stitches at the back of the neck. Finally continue the row with a length of chain for the chin protector and do a few more rows to make it quite chunky. Add the brim in grey by starting with single crochet, then double, then trebles, and back down to double and single again, so the centre is wider. Decorate the helmet with bold designs.

The boot can be a knitted cylinder, but this one is open for most of the front, with a red tongue inside. When you get to the foot, join into a circle and increase 2 sts at middle front on every row for several rows, to look like a toe. The sole is about 9 sts of chain, do single crochet down one side of the chain and up the other side, and then going round again. You have to do 2 stitches into 1 for the toe and heel ends, in order to turn the bend.

The two straps are single chains with added gold thread for the brass buckles. Make sure the straps are attached going opposite ways, to get a left and right foot!

Biker Bear2 has arrived safely at his destination and is ready to explore the rocky outcrop in the hills!

Church Teddies

These Teddies are Play Bears or Pastoral Bears. Lots of them are needed, as they tend to get passed around, put on tables, shelves, music stands, door handles and everywhere. They love to take part in stories and talks, as they are very good at playing all the parts. The shirts are just two squares with Garter Stitch borders to keep them flat.

Here we have an Angel Teddy, with brilliant white linen robe tied with sparkly belt. Brown Teddy says they are like the King's and Queen's servants, they bring the tea and cakes and then disappear until they are needed again! They have the tee shirt pattern but a lot longer, and with extra stitches added at the armhole to look like short sleeves, plus an opening at the top front.

Here is a Pastoral Bear ready to go out visiting. He has a Bible and a bag to carry it in. He could probably do with another plain notebook as well.

The Bible is a plain square of Stocking Stitch. The pages are the thin fabric that is found on cushion inners, very thin and not woven, therefore it cannot fray. Cut four pieces a bit larger than the book size, sew them down the middle with the same colour. Dampen the book lightly and pin it shut and flat, leaving it overnight. When dry, trim the pages edges to the right size. The cross is metallic gold yarn. This type of yarn unravels very easily because it is a thin woven chain, so the inside and the cut ends will have to be oversewn with sewing thread.

Merbear

We had a day out at the seaside at Brighton in Sussex, UK, and made Merbear so he could come with us.

Merbear is only happy sleeping in a sea-bed. The wavy front is in old Old Shale pattern (see Knitted Scenery Beach) with extra crochet loops and picots as a cast-off top edge for the foam. There is crochet chain seaweed in greens and dark red either side of the sandy pillow.

Merbear is based on a 7" stocking stitch Teddy size. Instead of legs just decrease slowly for the fish tail, and blend in the grey and blue colours with 1x1 st colour changes. Stop when there are 12 stitches left and knit separate tail fins:

For each tail fin: Knit 8 rows on 6 stitches, increasing every other row in the centre of this half of the fin. Then stop increasing the centre, and instead decreasing every 3rd row at the sides, leave a long yarn end, fold together and seam down the side.

Here is Merbear lounging on the beach in Brighton.

Ted Beds

More variations on the Ted beds.

Every Ted has a bed tailored to size.

The Itty Bitty Teddies (see Knitted Gardens - Garden In A Box) have itty bitty beds.

Fish and Chip Dinner

This fish and chip dinner is making me hungry! We have fried egg, battered cod, beans, giant chips and a streak of tomato sauce. The green is either parsley or lettuce, although it could also be mushy peas in a heap.

The beans were done in a Balloon Stitch, with extra stitching at the back to make them beans stand out. The egg white is a crochet circle with the outer rings going up to trebles to make a wavy blobby circle.

The cod flakes are two strips of white knitting of about 10 rows, with the centre row being "Yarn Over, Knit Two Together" all along, to make a holey row which can be folded over easily.

The giant chips are 6 rows Stocking Stitch then a Garter Stitch row, done four times, but the last row, instead of Garter, is done by picking up the cast on edge, and then casting off both stitches together, which makes the fourth raised edge.

Farm

The farm is made with lots of Garter Stitch squares, using the diagonal method - start with one stitch, increase at the beginning of every row until it is the right size, then decrease back down to one stitch. Having lots of seams means the farm lies flat and doesn't roll up at the edges. The river was done in normal straight knitting to avoid having seams across the water and so it looks like ripples all in the same direction.

It is easy to do colour changes on the squares, to make the bends in the river. Here the veg patch is underway, with rows of stripes ready to put in the plants.

The whole farm has been edged with crochet to make a firm border. Here I am adding the fir trees, which are tall pointed triangles in Garter Stitch, rolled up into a cone shape.

Here is the farm and all the animals investigating their new home. The hedges are strips of Garter Stitch rolled up, so they don't need stuffing. At top right there are some round grey rocks that the river gushes out of.

The field of stubble on the left has a few bunches of ripe wheat still standing, and below it in the veg patch are two pots of seedlings. Further down, next to the middle barn, is a water butt and a small square compost bin.
